FM Bug Very surprised to see these still for sale in the UK. They are illegal as they interfere with the FM radio bands. The miniature bug, powered by a PP3 9 volt battery, transmits up to 300 metres (shortened by obstacles such as walls etc) to an FM radio receiver. Ten years ago, before the advent of GSM bugs, this was what you used to bug people with. This is a fairly basic bug, other variants using different frequencies could be quite powerful indeed. One pitfall is that anyone in range with an FM radio could also pick up the transmission! For more info see our BLOG POST.
Pros – An interesting blast from the past
Cons – Illegal

CHEAP (and potentially nasty) GSM Bug This is a good example of the problems of buying spy gear (check out the reviews once you’ve followed the link). This GSM bug should operate thus: insert SIM card, charge up, switch on, leave in position, ring it from your phone to listen in. However, what most folk will find is that it won’t get on the mobile phone networks. This is usually because the IMEI number allocated to the GSM modem inside the bug has never been approved by the UK networks, possibly due to expense of approval or simply that the modem isn’t good enough to get approval. The problems of buying these are compounded by the fact that not all bugs that look like this are bad. The same outer casing is used by many manufacturers, what is inside can vary greatly though.
Pros – You may be lucky and get one that works
Cons – Its more likely you won’t!
